Ireland played its first official baseball game against the Czech Republic on August 8, 1996. Although the team got off to a quick start thanks to an unlikely Irishman (Gus Hernandez), things went downhill quickly.

Despite a horrendous start, the Irish able to defeat Yugoslavia for its first win in international competition. The win helped establish baseball as a small but growing sport in Ireland.
